2020 Cup Series champion Chase Elliott is set to miss several weeks after hurting himself in a snowboarding accident.
Hendrick Motorsports officials confirmed that their No. 9 Chevrolet driver Chase Elliott has suffered a fractured tibia while snowboarding in Colorado. He underwent a successful three-hour surgery. However, it is not yet sure when the 2020 champion can return to racing.
In the meanwhile, Josh Berry, a full-time driver in the NASCAR Xfinity Series for JR Motorsports, will take the seat of the No. 9 Chevrolet.

As Elliott is set to miss several weeks, he will need a waiver to be eligible to win the championship. Since it is not a racing accident, there is debate as to whether Elliott deserves a waiver. However, Kyle Petty is of the opinion that it shouldn’t matter how you injure yourself and that Ellliott should get a waiver. He said:
“We praise Kyle Busch and Kyle Larson and all these guys who go out and race six nights a week in winged spirit cars and go-karts and midgets, but God forbid you can’t go snowboarding and get hurt. He should get a waiver. I don’t care how you get hurt. That’s what the medical waiver is for.”
Hendrick Motorsports have confirmed that they have applied for a medical waiver. While Elliott might not race for several weeks, he can still win the championship if given a waiver. After all, since winning the 2020 championship, he has made it to the final four races in the last two seasons.
Well let’s just say I don’t agree with it, but you did it for Busch who didn’t deserve the chance so I believe you have to give everyone else who happens to be injured no matter how that opportunity to go for it!!!
