Jimmie Johnson’s return to the NASCAR Cup Series Racing took Petty GMS driver Noah Gragson by surprise.

But it is not just him that s surprised by the decision. The seven-time Cup Series champion announced that he would return to NASCAR after two years of absence since his retirement from full-time Cup racing back in 2020.

He returns as the c0-owner of Petty GMS but he will also drive select Cup races in the 2023 season.

As for Johnson’s driver at Petty GMS, Gragson will be competing in his first full-time season at the Cup Series. He said that to have a serial winner in Johnson is “pretty special” for the team.

“You know, I feel like if you believe in yourself and you can be in a position where people believe in you as well, good things happen,” Gragson explained. “And I think that’s the vision with Maury Gallagher. Mike Beam, Richard Petty, the Petty family. Now, Jimmie Johnson, it’s pretty special.”

While Gragson was already there at the team before Johnson’s signing, he said that he didn’t have any inside information prior to the signing. Like many fans and NASCAR professionals, he was very surprised by the news.

“I don’t think anyone — I was shocked personally — would have thought in their wildest dreams that Jimmie Johnson and Richard Petty and Maury Gallagher would team up to own a NASCAR Cup Series team,” Gragson added.

“But obviously a very special moment that we’ve had today, listening to Maury and Richard and Mike Beam and Jimmie just kind of reflect on their goals and vision, where they want to take this. I think it’s obviously a very special moment and [I’m] just excited to get to work with these guys.”

Gragson also said that Johnson was a sort of a “big brother figure” for him in the past years and to be able to work together with him will be really special for everyone involved.
