For any road course event that the Cup Series participates in, Chase Elliott becomes the favourite to win it, and the upcoming race at Sonoma Raceway will be no exception.
NASCAR will be back on the track for the first time since 2019. Having established himself as a star of road courses, the 2020 Cup Series Champion will be a favourite to win this race for his second win of the season. Six of his Cup wins have come on road courses, the most recent being his only Cup win of the 2021 season at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas.

Additionally, Elliott has won five of the last six road-course races. However, a victory at Sonoma has evaded the 2020 champion until now. In four starts, he has two top 10s and a best finish of fourth coming in 2018. He will get an opportunity to add to his road course victories in the coming weekend.
“Sonoma is a place that I haven‘t done a very good job in the past,” Elliott says. “It‘s been a pretty big challenge for me. It‘s been a couple of years since we‘ve been there, so it‘s been a while.
“When we were there in 2019, I felt like we were doing a great job and in a good position before we had our mechanical issue, so I‘m looking forward to getting back and having another shot at it.”
While Elliott was only just in his third year in 2018, when he last raced in Sonoma, he returns to the track as a very proficient road racer and a Cup Series champion. He is far better equipped to visit Victory Lane at the track this time around.
