2020 NASCAR Cup Series Champion Chase Elliott is looking to add Daytona 500 to his trophy collection in the upcoming edition of the race.
The 2021 off-season saw Elliott participate in the Chili Bowl and Rolex 24 at Daytona. Now, he will be turning his attention to the upcoming Daytona 500 and the 2021 Cup Series season.
Having conquered the series in 2020, Elliott now has set his sights in the famed Daytona 500. Speaking about the importance of the race to him, the No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports driver said:
“Obviously a great event, you know, and an exciting event to start our season. The history around it, I think about this event, I think about the ’79 500.”
“And really that race to me, without that event, does NASCAR propel into what it turned into, live TV and the excitement that brought? Is NASCAR this without that race?”
Winning Daytona 500 holds its own prestige and like every other driver, Elliott will be looking to win this race at least once in his career.
“So I think about, the history of the event more than I do anything else and it’s a great race, an exciting race. A race that everybody wants to win, and it’d be a great event to add your name to, and hopefully I can one day.”
While Elliott doesn’t have a good record in Daytona 500 so far, he is a far better driver with experience and has a Cup Series championship to show for it. Winning it will not only give him a title he craves but could also be a solid foundation to defend his title in the 2021 season.
