Hendrick Motorsports announced that Alex Bowman will take over the soon-to-be-vacant No. 48 Chevrolet seat for the next season.
Johnson is set to retire from full-time Cup racing at the end of the 2020 season. There was a lot of speculation as to who will replace him in the No. 48 Chevrolet. But, it is confirmed that the replacement will be done internally. Bowman will leave his No. 88 seat to take over the No. 48 seat from the 2021 season.
Speaking about the decision, the seven-time winner said:
“I look at Alex’s career and how hard he has worked to create opportunity and to maximize opportunity. I remember him being him in the Cup Series years and years ago just fighting for his job and driving off the wheels of the cars he was in there.
“Then to see him develop as a driver and continue to apply himself more and more each and every year, to continue to mature and grow. He’s earned the right.”
“He really has earned the opportunity to drive the 48 car. I believe he’s gonna do an amazing job behind the wheel,”
I’ve had 19 mind blowing seasons in the 48, now it’s your turn @alexbowman88. I know I’m leaving her in great hands brother. #DoItRight pic.twitter.com/Rv4YFWbJhT
