Erik Jones was given the boot by Joe Gibbs Racing as they didn’t want to extend his contract beyond the 2020 season. He will need to look for a new ride going into the 2021 Cup Series season.
However, it is widely rumored that JGR decided to let Jones go to bring rookie Christopher Bell behind the wheels of the No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota. The Athletic reported the news after Bell is in fact the candidate to replace Jones.
Currently driving No. 95 Toyota for the Leavine Family Racing, Bell was going to be without a ride for the 2021 season as LFR decided to cease operation after the end of the current operation. As JGR has a technical alliance with LFR, it was upon them to decide whether to keep Bell or let him go to other teams.
Jones sits on 19th position in the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series Standings, 31 points off the playoffs cut-off line.
